MATINE Lab

The laboratory was founded in August 2026, when Prof. Jin Woo Lee joined the KAIST Graduate School of Culture Technology. The lab is dedicated to exploring the intersection of music, technology, and innovation, with a focus on developing new musical instruments, audio devices, and music-making tools.

The name MATINE Lab stands for "Musical Acoustics and Transducer Instrument Engineering Laboratory", taking its name from the "matinรฉe concert", which refers to a musical performance held during the mornings or afternoon on weekdays. As both researchers and musicians, we unite with performers, instrument makers, and master artisans, to envision a better world through technology. Our matinรฉe concerts will continue until the day when everyone is free to engage in creative musical expressions and audial experiences.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide technological solutions that empower individuals to design new instruments, preserve existing ones, invent novel performance equipments, and thereby innovate new avenues for free artistic expression.

Lab Culture

We are a team of researchers, engineers, and musicians who are passionate about the intersection of music and technology. We value creativity, collaboration, and curiosity, and we strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all members of our community.

Career Pathways

We are confident that our graduates are well-prepared to pursue successful careers in both academia and industry. Many graduates in our field have successfully transition into diverse roles across both academia and industry. Our laboratory actively collaborates with various institutions both in the academia and the industry.
